"Learning by doing" and earning money by enterprise characterise 4H activities. A project is a topic a member decides to learn. 4H members can choose projects from several categories, such as animal farming, horticulture & gardening, forestry, home economics, handicrafts, environment, data work, international activities and so on. By participating in a variety of projects 4H members develop skills that are useful throughout their lives. A project can be a "mini- enterprise". During home visits a 4H advisor gives young people personal advice, for example, on planning, budgeting, bookkeeping and marketing. Moreover young people acquire manual skills, pre-professional training in primary production, and gain valuable practical experience. The scheme creates year-round or summer jobs in a home environment.
Encouraging enterprise among youth is also one way of helping rural areas to develop themselves. Through young people, a 4H advisor can introduce a fresh way of thinking to the countryside and thus promote positive attitudes.
